Turner Field Sign

When the Atlanta Braves decided to move from Turner Field to SunTrust Park in Cobb County, a decision had not yet been made on what would happen to the old stadium.  Yet the announcement came in August of 2016 that Georgia State University would purchase the field for use as its new football stadium.   The school officially took ownership of Turner Field on December 31st, with plans to demolish and renovate the property in time for the opening of the Fall 2017 season.

Taking Down the Sign

Phoenix Crane was called to take down the iconic letters in the Turner Field sign on July 5th, 2017.  Richard Elliot, a reporter with local news channel WSB-TV was live on the site taking video and talking about the history of the field.  While most Atlantans are sad to see Turner Field go, many are excited for GSU’s project and what the new football stadium will provide for the area.  The school allows the public to keep track of the new field’s progress HERE.  No word yet on what is happening to the letters.

SunTrust Park Billboard

When the Atlanta Braves moved from Turner Field to SunTrust Park in Cobb County in 2017, we were delighted to take part in the final phase of construction.  On February 10th, 2017, J-Mar Craneworks requested two of our Linkbelt ATC 3275’s to assist in lifting the new billboard at Circle 75 Parkway and Harodian Way, visible from I-75 South.

On March 8, 2017, construction camera provider OxBlue released a time-lapse video of SunTrust Park’s construction. The high-definition time-lapse movie was produced using over 203,000 images taken by three cameras over a 21-month period.

Opening Days

The Braves received the certificate of occupancy for the entire ballpark on February 24, 2017. With seats, video boards and most other elements already installed, the sod was one of the last missing pieces of the new ballpark. Workers began the installation of 109,000 square feet of sod on March 4, 2017, a task that took two to three days to complete.  The first game in the new park was held on Friday, April 14th, 2017 and was met with enthusiasm.  Photos of the festivities can be viewed HERE.
